Mike Kelley's Biography
Mike Kelley (Michael Kelley) (October 27, 1954 – January 31, 2012) was an American artist who worked in a variety of media including photography, works on paper, video installation, and performance/happening. He was born in Los Angeles, CA and is known for his works in the New Gothic Art and Lowbrow/Pop Surrealism movements.
Kelley first gained recognition in the late 1970s with his punk influenced performances and installations. He went on to become a major figure in Los Angeles art scene and later on in the international art world. His works explored themes of memory, identity, and the psychological power of objects. His works often featured found objects, appropriated images and themes of middle class angst. He also explored the relationship between popular culture and fine art.
Kelley's works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. His work has been included in numerous group shows, including "Ridiculously Yours! Art, Awkwardness and Enthusiasm" at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, Germany and "Mirror Mirror - Fashion & The Psyche" at the MoMu in Antwerp, Belgium. He has also had solo exhibitions
