Mickalene Thomas's Biography
Mickalene Thomas is an American contemporary artist who was born in 1971. She is best known for her vibrant, rhinestone-studded paintings of powerful female subjects. Her art is often referred to as a part of the Black artistic Renaissance, the movement that emphasizes the significance of the African-American experience. Thomas often employs collage, printmaking and photography in addition to painting. Her works are found in numerous collections around the world, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
