Matthew Barney's Biography
Matthew Barney is an American artist who was born in 1967 in San Francisco, California. He is known for his pioneering use of time-based media, video installation, sculpture, installation art, and performance art. He first gained recognition in the early 1990s with his acclaimed Cremaster Cycle. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at many international venues including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His work often deals with themes of mythology, sexuality, and physical transformation. He has enjoyed many awards and accolades, including the Hugo Boss Prize in 1996 and the Distinguished Artist Award from the Americans for the Arts in 2012.
