Mathieu K. Abonnenc's Biography
Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc is a French visual artist born in 1977. He works in various media and explores issues of identity, cultural hybridization, and creolization. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Jeu de Paume, the Palais de Tokyo, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has also taken part in numerous biennials, including the 2017 Dakar Biennial, the 2019 Sharjah Biennial, and the 2017 Gwangju Biennial. He is also a professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Abonnenc's practice is influenced by his research in anthropology and his engagement with local communities. He often works in collaboration with people whose lives are impacted by processes of globalization, such as migrant and refugee populations. He is particularly interested in exploring the ways in which the colonial legacy continues to shape our understanding of cultural identity.
