Lynda Benglis's Biography

Lynda Benglis is an American sculptor and installation artist best known for her provocative works that incorporate a variety of materials and techniques. Born in 1941 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Benglis graduated from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1963, and soon afterwards moved to New York City to pursue a career in art. Throughout her career, Benglis has explored a wide range of materials and techniques, including latex, fiberglass, foam, wax, and video, to produce an oeuvre that often blurs the lines between painting and sculpture. She is considered a pioneer of the Process Art movement, which emphasized the nature of the creative process as opposed to the finished product. In addition to her art, Benglis is also known for her provocative self-portraits, which often challenge notions of gender and sexuality. Her work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad, and her many honors include the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, and the Anonymous Was a Woman Award, among others.
