Kehinde Wiley's Biography

Kehinde Wiley is an American contemporary artist best known for his vibrant and expressive portraits of African American people. He was born in 1977 in Los Angeles, California and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Wiley is renowned for his ultra-contemporary works that pay homage to the Black artistic Renaissance. He paints on large-scale canvases, depicting his subjects in poses that recall the grandeur of European nobility and the power of royalty. His work has been widely exhibited, including in the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. In 2021, Wiley was honored with the U.S. State Department's Medal of Arts. He is also the artist-in-residence of the Brooklyn Museum.
