Jo Baer's Biography

Jo Baer (born 1929) is an American artist known for her works of Minimalism. Born in Seattle and raised in Berkeley, California, Baer attended the University of California, Berkeley and the California School of Fine Arts. She began her career as an abstract expressionist painter in the 1950s, but by the mid-1960s she had moved towards Minimalism, creating starkly geometrical canvases that often featured only two colors and a single line. Baer has been an influential figure in Minimalism, and her works can be found in many major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Tate Modern in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
