Jasper Johns's Biography

Jasper Johns is an American artist best known for his iconic paintings and sculptures that defined the Pop Art movement. Johns was born in 1930 in Augusta, Georgia and grew up in South Carolina. He studied at the University of South Carolina and the Parsons School of Design. His work often involves reworking of familiar images and symbols, such as the American flag. Johns has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and is a part of numerous public and private collections. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1990 and was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Johns continues to work and exhibit his work worldwide.
