Jacolby Satterwhite's Biography

Jacolby Satterwhite is an American artist from Columbia, South Carolina. He is best known for his work exploring themes of identity, memory and fantasy through a variety of mediums including drawing, performance, and time-based media. Satterwhite's artwork is often informed by his own family history, incorporating family photographs and stories to create his own personal mythology. He seeks to address issues of identity and race through his work, often blending aspects of the digital and physical realms. Satterwhite has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also been featured in many publications, including Artforum and Hyperallergic. Satterwhite is currently based in Brooklyn, and is a professor of Art at the Pratt Institute. He is part of the ultra-contemporary movement and considered a leader of the Black artistic renaissance.
