Ellen Gallagher's Biography

Ellen Gallagher is an American contemporary artist, born in 1965. She is best known for her explorations into the intersections between African-American identity, cultural histories and the avant-garde. Her work has been recognized for its sharp commentary on race, gender and the cultural construction of identity. She largely works with painting and drawing, but also uses video and installation to create her pieces. Gallagher’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including In The Black Fantastic (2022) at Kunsthal Rotterdam and A Gateway To Possible Worlds. Art & Science-Fiction. (2022) at Centre Pompidou-Metz. She has also been included in prestigious collections such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern, among others.
