Ed Ruscha's Biography

Ed Ruscha (born Edward Joseph Ruscha IV; 1937) is an American artist known for his paintings, prints, books, and photographs. He began his career as a commercial artist in Los Angeles, and is associated with the Pop Art movement. Ruscha has developed a signature style of painting and drawing which draws on his fascination with words, language, and American consumer culture, as well as his interest in the West and the history of California. His work has been the subject of many major exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 2006. He is also the author of numerous books, including Hollywood (1968), Some Los Angeles Apartments (1972), and Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles (1967).
