Dara Birnbaum's Biography
Dara Birnbaum is an American artist and media theorist known for her pioneering works in the field of video art. She was born in 1946 in New York City and attended the University of California, Berkeley and the California Institute of the Arts. Her work often explores themes of gender, power and technology, especially in relation to television and the media. She uses appropriated images from mass media and explores the ways in which television and other forms of media shape our understanding of the world. Her work has been exhibited in numerous institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
