Daniel Buren is a French conceptual artist and sculptor best known for his works featuring vertical stripes of alternating colors. Born in 1938 in Paris, France, Buren first studied painting at the Ecole des Métiers d'Art in Paris. His early works featured two-dimensional geometric shapes, such as cross-hatched lines, circles and squares. In 1965, he began to use stripes in his works, which he continues to use today. Buren is also known for his large-scale public installations, which often involve painting walls or floors with his signature stripes. His works can be found in the permanent collections of major museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has exhibited extensively, and has been honored with numerous awards and honors, including the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1986.
