Charline von Heyl is a German contemporary artist known for her abstract paintings. Born in 1960 in Germany, von Heyl attended the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1980 to 1985. She moved to the United States in 1989 to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. After settling in New York City in 1990, she was featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. Von Heyl's abstract works often feature a combination of shapes and colors that suggest a narrative without being explicit. She has stated that her approach to painting is not necessarily representational, but instead is an attempt to capture the energy of the painting process. Her works have been described as playful, energetic, and complex, and have been compared to the work of early modernist masters. Von Heyl has received numerous awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in 2004 and the Carnegie Prize for Painting in 2005. She has also been honored with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2007, as well as exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world.
