Charles Gaines's Biography

Charles Gaines is an American artist best known for his works on paper, installation art, and kinetic art. Gaines was born in 1944 in New York City and attended school in the Bronx. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and later at the California Institute of Arts in Los Angeles. He has been a professor of art at the University of California Los Angeles since 1985. Gaines is best known for his works on paper, which often involve the use of grids and geometric patterns. He has also created numerous installation works, which often incorporate video, sound, and kinetic elements. He has been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, among others. In 2003, Gaines was awarded the Bucksbaum Award for excellence in American art. Gaines has been a major influence on contemporary art, and his works are in the collections of numerous museums and galleries around the world. He has been a professor of art at the University of California Los Angeles since 1985.
