Cauleen Smith's Biography

Cauleen Smith is a contemporary American artist who works primarily in film. Born in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, Smith received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991 and her M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1994. Smith's works have been showcased in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. She has also participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Whitney Museum in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Smith's work often explores themes of identity, spirituality, and the African diaspora. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Creative Capital Grant, and a Rockefeller Fellowship, and her works have been featured in the Whitney Biennial, the Berlin International Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival.
