Arnulf Rainer is an Austrian painter and one of the most important representatives of the Viennese Actionism movement. Rainer was born in 1929 in Baden, Austria, and spent his childhood in the small town of Baden bei Wien. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was trained in traditional painting techniques, and graduated in 1952.
In the late 1950s, Rainer began to experiment with abstract expressionism and was inspired by the works of artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. In 1965, Rainer joined the Viennese Actionism movement, which included other prominent Austrian artists such as Günter Brus and Hermann Nitsch. The group was known for their provocative and often shocking performances, which often included nudity and violence.
