Alison Knowles's Biography
Alison Knowles is an American multimedia artist and Fluxus member. Born in 1933 in New York City, she was an early disciple of John Cage, studying with him at the New School for Social Research in 1954-55. She also studied with Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham and others. Her works are often performance-based, drawing on the everyday and using chance operations to create works that often reflect on the nature of time and the human condition. Her works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world. She is also known for her books, including her memoir, A House of Dust (2017), and her collections of poetry and essays.
