Alicja Kwade's Biography

Alicja Kwade is a German-born contemporary artist known for creating sculptures, photographs, and installations that investigate the instability of perception and the fragility of reality. Born in 1979 in Szczecin, Poland, she moved to Germany in her twenties, where she studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, receiving her master’s degree in 2004. She has exhibited in numerous international exhibitions and biennials, including the 1st Beijing Biennial (2022), the Measure by Measure (2022) at the König in Seoul, and the Venice Biennale (2021). Kwade’s work has been collected by esteemed institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Kwade’s work often deals with the perception of space and time, and her installations often employ everyday objects in order to explore the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical. She has also explored themes of metamorphosis and transformation, using her work to challenge the assumed connections between the objects she creates.
